An abnormal cervical screening result is a reason for follow-up, not an automatic diagnosis of cancer. The next step depends on the exact HPV and cell findings, previous history and the screening pathway being used.
Read the complete result
Ask whether the finding concerns high-risk HPV, cell changes, an inadequate sample or a combination. These results have different implications. A positive HPV result does not establish when the infection was acquired and should not be used to draw conclusions about a relationship.
Understand the proposed next step
Repeat testing or colposcopy may be recommended. Colposcopy allows a closer look at the cervix, and a biopsy may be taken where appropriate. Ask whether the appointment is for assessment only or whether treatment might be offered at the same visit.
Discuss treatment if it is needed
Ask what abnormality has been identified, what the proposed treatment removes and what risks or follow-up matter. Mention future pregnancy plans and previous cervical procedures. Some findings need surveillance rather than immediate treatment, so ask why a particular option is recommended for you.
Keep the follow-up date
Write down the due date and who will arrange it. If you move or change clinics, take the original report and treatment records with you. Report new symptoms such as unusual bleeding even while awaiting routine follow-up. If the wording of the result is frightening, ask the clinician to translate it into three points: what was found, what is still uncertain and what happens next. That is more useful than interpreting an isolated laboratory abbreviation online.
