Laparoscopic gynaecological surgery uses small abdominal incisions and a camera, but the extent of the operation can vary considerably. Preparation should be based on the planned procedure, not simply the label keyhole surgery.
Confirm the purpose and possible extent
Ask whether the operation is mainly diagnostic, intended to treat a known condition or may involve both. Discuss what the surgeon may do if unexpected findings are present and what would require a separate decision. Consent should make the proposed limits understandable.
Prepare your medical information
Bring a medication list, allergies, previous operation details and anaesthetic history. Tell the team about possible pregnancy, recent illness and any change in health. Ask specifically which medicines to take or withhold; do not stop blood-thinning or long-term treatment on your own.
Follow the admission instructions
Fasting, arrival time, preoperative tests and skin preparation should come from the surgical team. Ask whether an overnight stay is likely and what could change that. Arrange a responsible adult and transport if same-day discharge is planned, especially when general anaesthesia is used.
Plan for recovery and results
Ask about pain relief, wound care, movement, work and lifting. Recovery after a brief diagnostic procedure can differ from recovery after extensive treatment. Obtain an emergency contact and ask when operation findings and tissue results will be discussed. Before surgery, make sure the expected benefit, alternatives and important risks have been explained. Small incisions do not remove the need for informed consent or a realistic recovery plan.
